What this session is all about:

Over the last 25 years, cognitive linguists have given centre stage to phenomena like metaphor, metonymy and conceptual integration, which more traditional paradigms of linguistic inquiry have relegated to the periphery of cognitive processing. The theme session on ‘Cognitive-Linguistic Approaches to Humour’ is meant as a forum to extend the cognitive-linguistic framework to another peripheralized area of conceptual inquiry, viz. humour. It is the organizers’ firm belief that Cognitive Linguistics can provide articulate tools to study the complex nexus of quantitative and qualitative phenomena that combine to yield humour. What is more, studying humour from this perspective may bring us one step closer to articulating a framework for exploring the systematicity, stability and dynamics of not just humour, but also artistic creativity and scientific insight.
The session will address several interrelated questions central to a cognitive-linguistic approach: the relevance of mental
spaces and frames in humour; the role of metaphor, metonymy and conceptual integration in het generation and interpretation of humour; the logical basis of jokes and the role of inference in achieving humorous catharsis, etc.
