Abundantia Verborum
3. Tutorial
3.1 Getting the data
The most important and most general-purpose mechanism for
data collection in Abundantia Verborum is retrieving
data from corpora with a query and putting the results from this
query in a workshop (a workshop is a container for the
material for a case study).
The query mechanism
This query mechanism is the topic of 3.1 Getting the data.
Basic concepts are explained in the introductory
section 3.1.1 Using Queries. The next section,
3.1.2 A first query, introduces a first,
simple example. Some slightly more complicated
examples are treated in subsequent sections
3.1.3 Queries with Boolean operators and
3.1.4 Queries with wildcards.
The section 3.1.5 Virtual corpora
zooms in on the mechanism for specifying which files are to be searched,
and the final section
3.1.6 Query settings gives an overview
of bells and whistles for fine-tuning and adjusting the actual running of
the query to one's own preferences.
Other types of data collection
The query mechanism is not the only option for collecting data
with Abundantia Verborum. Alternatives are:
- importing data from relational databases into a workshop
- manually adding data to a workshop in case
the material comes from a source that is not available in any digital form
- obtaining derived data or any type of meta-information that, unlike the
object-data (i.e. observed linguistic utterances), does not belong in a
workshop: e.g. basic corpus statistics, frequency lists, concordances, ...
These alternatives are not treated in this tutorial. They are documented
in the online Abundantia Verborum Help.
