How to use the COBUILD corpus (jLookup access)

Main Accessing the corpus Searching the corpus Downloading the extraction Formatting tip

As an alternative to the corpus access tool "Lookup" which is available via telnet access, the COBUILD team has developed a Java version of the program, "jLookup" (with j for Java, a programming language). jLookup offers basically the same functions as the ordinary Lookup program, but it does so in an intuitively easier user interface in which especially the more advanced functions, such as refining a query within a corpus extraction already made, no longer require cumbersome character commands but merely a few mouse-clicks. There is also some 'real' added functionality:

  • with jLookup, it is again possible to view a particular citation both in its immediate and its broader context (the "article mode" which used to be available via telnet-Lookup, but no longer was),
  • and with jLookup, it is no longer necessary to download extractions via ftp; they can be downloaded directly from within the program.

In the sections you can browse using the top links, a concise introduction to installing and using the jLookup program is given. For more extensive documentation, please refer to COBUILD's jLookup tutorial and reference guide.
