Welcome

Welcome to the small website devoted to the course in Applied Linguistics at the English Linguistics section of the Department of Linguistics, University of Leuven.

This course is taught at MA level during the second term by Prof. Kristin Davidse (with the co-participation of Tine Breban, Lieselotte Brems, Liesbet Heyvaert, Lieven Vandelanotte, and Peter Willemse). This year, the aim of the course is to offer participants an introduction to corpus research; the topic of this corpus research is the lexicogrammatical structure of the English nominal group.

Methodological and descriptive reference material are available within the ICT-environment "FirstClass" which is used extensively for this course. The aim of this website is to introduce students to a number of computer skills they will need in order to use the FirstClass software, and in order to access and interrogate the COBUILD corpus. With the help of the practical pointers contained in this website, students should be able to consult all the material they need, and to post corpus data and its analysis, and in the end the term paper flowing from it, on the FirstClass system.

The navigation menu on your left gives access to the main subsections of this website, centered around the following questions:

  • How can I access FirstClass, and how do I work with it?
  • How do I obtain access to the COBUILD corpus, how do I extract data from it and how do I save and process these?
  • For comparative (English-Dutch) topics, how do I obtain Dutch corpus material?
  • For recent developments that are insufficiently reflected in electronic corpora, how can I use the internet to find relevant examples?
  • How do I go about publishing my work (in progress as well as the finished product) on FirstClass?

In addition, you can browse a list of (textual and hypertextual) reference works, and find references to some of the research and publication output flowing from this seminar and similar work within the English Linguistics section.
